Performance Consulting for Clinicians

The UMMS Performance Consulting team is comprised of clinicians who partner with other UMMS clinicians to evaluate clinical outcomes associated with the purchase of certain equipment and tools. Together, UMMS clinicians and Performance Consulting review clinical outcomes data to evaluate the relationship between using certain products and achieving the best patient outcomes. To make such evaluations, Performance Consulting accesses various unbiased, third-party outcomes databases to compare products of similar commodity to better determine selection to maximize patient care delivery outcomes.

The UMMS Performance Consulting team has collectively spent thousands of hours as patient care clinicians in UMMS operating rooms, patient care units and perioperative services. As experienced clinicians, they can help physicians and nurses navigate the product purchasing experience by identifying advantages and disadvantages of supplies and devices based on objective, third-party clinical outcomes data.

Performance Consulting is not involved in contract negotiations with product vendors. Instead, they focus on how UMMS clinicians are going to use the materials under consideration for purchase. In an effort to elevate clinical performance across the entire medical system, Performance Consulting pays special attention to:

  • Standardization - Identification  of a primary product or vendor that can provide the same outstanding patient outcomes across UMMS
  • Utilization - Clinical usage patterns and behaviors associated with certain products across UMMS

Clinicians are encouraged to contact the UMMS Performance Consulting team with new product inquiries. In partnership with our contracting colleagues, they will assess the consideration potential from a system perspective.
