What is the Care Delivery Optimization Project?
The Care Delivery Optimization (CDO) Project is a System-wide strategy to return valuable time to frontline team members so they can provide the highest level of patient-centered care to patients and their families.
The CDO Project began in November 2021 as a response to our team’s call for relief from critical challenges such as staffing shortages, high burnout, and compassion fatigue. Since then, it has evolved into a multi-faceted approach to reduce waste, optimize documentation, and continue evolving our model of care delivery through three dedicated subgroups: Cross-Functional Collaboration, Documentation Redesign and Technology Innovation, and Top of License.
Goals of the Care Delivery Optimization Project
The CDO Project has listened to the voice of the frontline and established the following three goals to enhance opportunities for our team to meaningfully interact with our patients:
- Reduce documentation and time spent in the electronic health record by 25% by 2025
- Enable all team members to practice at the top of their license and abilities
- Reduce waste and redundancies related to non-clinical tasks
The Documentation Redesign and Technology Innovation subgroup encourages more meaningful interaction with the electronic health record. Through its “relief bundles”, frontline team members across the System have adopted more efficient documentation practices, resulting in 42,410 potential hours saved. This subgroup also aims to explore technology such as prescriptive analytics and artificial intelligence to continue evolving the care delivery model.
Top of License
The Top of License subgroup will rebuild a care delivery model that utilizes the full extent of their diverse education, training, and experience. This subgroup is currently focused on reviewing and standardizing the scope of nursing roles such as LPNs, CNAs, PCTs, and Nursing Students with the intent of fully utilizing the skills of all existing direct care team members.
Additionally, this subgroup is involved in implementing innovative partnerships with Nursing schools and the Maryland Board of Nursing to design curriculum that increase the scope, experience, and quantity of new grads to support staffing levels around the system.
Cross Functional Collaboration
The Cross-Functional Collaboration subgroup will improve nurse satisfaction and patient experience by partnering with our Operations colleagues to reduce waste and redundancies related to non-clinical tasks. The Cross-Functional collaboration subgroup will reduce nurses’ time on reheating and distributing meals, stocking supplies, and performing housekeeping activities.
