Volunteer Policy

Covid-19 Response

March 9, 2022

Volunteers fulfill a unique role in providing care and service to our patients. The Volunteer Policy was put in place to establish consistent standards for volunteer activity and participation in UMMS facilities during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The policy was updated on March 8, 2022, to clarify that individuals who have been exposed to COVID-19 should follow UMMS and Occupational Health policies to determine quarantine and testing, as well as when they are able to return to an UMMS facility to resume volunteer activities. The updated policy also incorporates references to the UMMS Tiered Approach to Infection Prevention Practice and Presence at the Workplace (UMMS Tiered Approach), emphasizing that volunteers must follow all infection prevention guidance outlined in the UMMS Tiered Approach.

FAQs

How are volunteers being informed of these policy changes?

Each affiliate hospital will notify their volunteers of this policy change.

Why do volunteers need to sign a waiver?

It is important that volunteers acknowledge that UMMS is continuing to operate in the midst of the COVID-19 health pandemic, as they are making decisions about when to return to our facilities. While we are taking every step necessary to create and sustain a safe environment of care and work, potential for exposure to the virus does exist. The waiver is designed to inform volunteers of that risk and confirm their acknowledgement of understanding.

Can volunteers visit with patients?

Visitation in non-COVID-19 patient areas may be possible and will be facilitated in accordance with the Strict Patient Safety (Visitor) Policy. Volunteers are not permitted to assist or interact with any patient who is suspected or confirmed to have COVID-19.

Can individuals over the age of 70 volunteer?

Yes. However, we encourage those with comorbid and immunosuppressive conditions to carefully weigh the decision to return to our hospitals as volunteers, in consultation with their personal physician. This recommendation is made out of an abundance of caution, in an effort to protect those who are most vulnerable and at highest risk for community-based transmission of the COVID-19 virus.

Can pregnant women volunteer?

Yes. However, we encourage women who are expecting to carefully weigh the decision to volunteer, and consult with their OBGYN prior to resuming responsibilities on-site.

Can minors volunteer?

At this time, we allowing individuals over the age of 16 to volunteer. This decision was made out of an abundance of caution.

Does the Visitor Policy allow volunteers providing animal therapy to come into the hospitals?

Yes. The policy confirms volunteer activities that include use of animal therapy are permitted.

How will UMMS confirm that people coming in to volunteer are not sick?

Volunteers will participate in screening procedures upon arrival to any UMMS facility, which may include a temperature check. Anyone who screens positively will not be able to volunteer.
