GME Guidance

Residents and fellows who are training at UMMS hospitals are a very important part of our team. Their safety, along with that of all clinical providers, is a top priority as we continue to manage the impact of COVID-19 on our organization.
On May 6, 2020, UMMS developed Graduate Medical Education (GME) guidelines to allow residents and fellows to advance their medical education requirements while also taking precautions to minimize their risk for exposure to COVID-19. Clustering care, maximizing use of electronic health records, and leveraging telehealth tools were among the strategies implemented. The policy also directed that the most senior physician – typically the attending – facilitate the care required for all patients suspected or confirmed to have COVID-19.
Effective July 16, 2020, a modified version of this guidance is being released, defining the scope of responsibility for residents and fellows working in our clinical care environments. These providers are permitted to provide care for patients suspected or confirmed to have COVID-19, under direct supervision by a skilled and more tenured physician. Trainees who participate in this level of patient care must have sufficient education and experience in infection prevention protocols, including use of appropriate PPE.
As this change is made, all providers will continue to follow ACGME guidance, as outlined on acgme.org.
