Playroom in UMMC pediatric ER

The University of Maryland Medical Center's pediatric emergency room is adjacent to the adult emergency room, but it remains exclusively dedicated to serving the needs of infants, children and teenagers. There is a separate triage area, playroom and waiting area designed for pediatric patients.

In addition, there are 16 pediatric treatment areas, many of which are glass enclosed, providing a quiet and safe environment. These rooms are spacious, helping to improve patient and family comfort for evaluation and management of simple problems and more complex issues that require admission. There is also a private area for the pediatric sexual abuse program.

The pediatric emergency room is staffed with a multi-disciplinary team of pediatricians, nurses, child life specialists, social workers, and others who are specifically trained in treating ill and injured children.

Sick children brought in by ambulance will be seen even faster now that there is new and improved access for Emergency Medical Services. The pediatric emergency team also provides immediate access to sub-specialty consultations as well as pediatric intensive care units. University of Maryland pediatricians provide medical direction for Maryland ExpressCare for Kids, a critical care transport program.
