Meet the Burley Family from Tulsa, OK
On July 28, 2012, Margaret and Frank Burley got the call that no parent ever wants to receive. Their 24-year-old daughter, Shawna Deloney, had been involved in a horrific car accident. Despite experiencing an open head wound, brain swelling, a detached left ear and multiple broken bones, Shawna miraculously survived. However, it became immediately clear that no hospital in their hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma, was equipped to provide the sophisticated traumatic brain injury rehabilitative care that Shawna needed in order to regain an optimal quality of life.
Committed to getting their daughter the expert care she required, the Burleys began a nationwide search for a facility that could uniquely help Shawna. Their search led them directly to the University of Maryland Rehabilitation & Orthopaedic Institute.
Margaret and Frank packed up their life and moved to Baltimore. To be close to Shawna, they lived at a local hotel before eventually relocating to a nearby apartment complex. When they would leave her for the night, Shawna felt isolated and alone and was often brought to tears. In spite of this challenge, Shawna made an amazing recovery. Today, she is completing college with aspirations to obtain a doctorate degree.
The Burley’s have no doubt they made the right decision by choosing the University of Maryland Rehabilitation & Orthopaedic Institute for Shawna’s care and recognize the need for the Hackerman-Patz House.
