Amputee Rehabilitation

The Limb Loss and Amputee Rehabilitation Program at the University of Maryland Rehabilitation & Orthopaedic Institute (UM Rehab) is here to guide you on your path to recovery so you can achieve your full potential.
We offer both inpatient and outpatient services to help you gain the knowledge, strength and confidence needed to navigate your new life.
Our services extend beyond just physical issues, such as wound care and prosthetics, or physical and occupational therapies. We help you to the new life that comes with losing a limb, offering support groups as well as activities like adapted sports.
Your Recovery Team
Our experts work closely with you, your family and caregivers throughout the entire rehabilitation process. Our clinical experts include:
- Physicians specializing in physical medicine and rehabilitation
- Neurologists
- Certified rehabilitation nurses
- Case managers
- Physical, occupational, recreational and respiratory therapists
- Speech-language pathologists
- Clinical dietitians
- Psychologists
- Certified orthotic and prosthetic practitioners
Inpatient Limb Loss Rehabilitation
While in the hospital, our team will create an individualized treatment plan that includes medical interventions, physical rehabilitation and psychosocial support.
Because the ultimate goal is to return home, our focus during inpatient rehabilitation is on functional recovery, including mobility and self-care skills.
Restoring functional mobility — and improving strength — during the inpatient phase of rehabilitation sets the stage for a successful transition to outpatient rehabilitation.
Outpatient Limb Loss Rehabilitation
After being discharged from the hospital, our team of experts will help you adjust to life at home and work, with a prosthetic. Our therapists work with you to improve your strength and conditioning, and increase your levels of activity.
Outpatient Limb Loss Services
- Pre-prosthetic preparation and prosthetic training
- Wheelchair training
- Physical therapy to improve strength, coordination, balance and functional mobility
- Occupational therapy to improve the performance of daily living activities
- Functional independence improvement by practicing different real-world scenarios
- Additional support includes:
- Ongoing support groups
- Wellness activities like adapted sports
- Life skills like driving

Ongoing Support
Our support groups and peer mentor groups are designed to be an educational forum and to help you connect with people that share the same challenges. Although the purpose of the meeting is educational, time is allowed for socializing and networking. Activities include:
- A variety of educational speakers relevant to limb loss or amputation
- A monthly caregivers support group, which is open to all caregivers of people with any disability, disease or condition
We also offer classes and events for those who have experienced limb loss.
