Traumatic Brain Injury Rehabilitation
The Inpatient Brain Injury Program at University of Maryland Rehabilitation & Orthopaedic Institute offers a supportive, therapeutic environment for adults and adolescents as they go through traumatic brain injury rehabilitation. Through comprehensive, structured, interdisciplinary rehabilitation programming, patients are assisted in reaching their highest possible level of independence in order to return to their community.
University Post-Acute Care Services created a rehab system with services at University of Maryland Rehabilitation & Orthopaedic Institute. This inpatient/outpatient system allows University Post-Acute Care Services to provide appropriate services for individuals with a range of medical and physical problems.
Patient Care
A patient's interdisciplinary team holds weekly meetings to discuss and evaluate his or her progress and care. Family/caregiver conferences - attended by the interdisciplinary team, the patient, and his or her family members/caregivers - are arranged as needed to review the patient's medical status, capability for independent functioning and rehabilitation goals. During these conferences, family members/caregivers are encouraged to ask questions and express any concerns they may have about their loved one's progress, discharge and at-home care needs.
Family Involvement
Family involvement in brain injury rehabilitation is paramount. The Inpatient Brain Injury Program features an array of educational offerings designed to train family members/caregivers on the techniques needed to assist their loved one and to help them understand the effects of brain injuries. Family and caregiver and support groups are also available.
The Brain Injury Program at University of Maryland Rehabilitation & Orthopaedic Institute is separate from other patient care units, has its own dining and activity areas, and features state-of-the-art patient care areas. The comfortable settings reduce anxiety, promote quicker recovery, and maintain patients' dignity and quality of life.
The Low Level Brain Injury Program available at University of Maryland Rehabilitation & Orthopaedic Institute provides medical and rehabilitative treatment to help bring patients to their highest level of functioning. When patients recover enough to participate in an inpatient brain injury recovery program, they are transferred to the Rehabilitation Program at University of Maryland Rehabilitation & Orthopaedic Institute. For those patients whose recovery will take longer, the staff assists families/caregivers in making plans for placement at other levels of care.
The Brain Injury Rehabilitation Program at University of Maryland Rehabilitation & Orthopaedic Institute provides individualized, goal-directed rehabilitation services to help each patient achieve the highest possible level of physical, cognitive and behavioral function preparation for return to the community. Multiple approaches to therapy focus on the improvement of daily living skills. Patients in this program may be offered therapy six days a week - based on the needs and tolerance of the patient. While at University of Maryland Rehabilitation & Orthopaedic Institute, patients have access to outstanding rehabilitation facilities, including well-equipped gyms, a 48-foot hydrotherapy pool, healing garden, sports courts and beautiful grounds.
Outpatient Follow-up Care
As patients and their families/caregivers prepare for discharge, the rehabilitation team will introduce them to University of Maryland Rehabilitation & Orthopaedic Institute's broad array of outpatient therapy services. These services, all of which follow a coordinated plan of care, include neuro-psychological follow-up care; speech-language pathology; occupational and physical therapies; and physician care.
Brain Injury Support Group
University of Maryland Rehabilitation & Orthopaedic Institute offers a brain injury support group for people with a brain injury, and their families/caregivers. There is also a weekly brain injury education program offered to families/caregivers. An additional resource, located near the brain injury unit, is the Brain Injury Association for Maryland.
University of Maryland Rehabilitation & Orthopaedic Institute is accredited by The Joint Commission and the Commission on the Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF).
