We provide a continuum of rehabilitative care for stroke patients from the moment their inpatient stay begins at the University of Maryland Rehabilitation and Orthopaedic Institute. And it continues well beyond their departure.

To help patients reach their rehabilitation goals, we provide a wide range of services, including:

High-Tech and High-Touch Stroke Rehabilitation

Our individualized, comprehensive treatment plans encourage patients to maximize their potential, providing support and care in a technologically advanced setting.

We collaborate with primary care physicians to ensure that family members have ongoing access to resources, tools and support throughout the recovery journey.

The University of Maryland Rehabilitation & Orthopaedic Institute has made significant investments in our facilities and technology to assist our patients as they recover.

• Our on-site therapy gym houses a kitchen to reintroduce patients to cooking and kitchen safety skills.
• For patients working to improve their independent walking, we feature a Healing Garden with different terrains — level and uneven.
• Advanced technology includes: Vector, Lokomat, L300, H200, TIMS, VitalStim.

Inpatient Stroke Care

Our comprehensive rehabilitation services help patients address physical challenges, achieve community re-entry and recover these daily living skills:

• Balance, coordination and mobility
• Medication and money management
• Cooking
• Memory, problem solving, reasoning, organization and attention
• Motor control, range of motion, strength and endurance
• Safety
• Self-feeding and swallowing
• Verbal and non-verbal communication
• Vocational and leisure capabilities

Assessments and Outings

In preparation for a patient's discharge, a team of therapists and nurses may conduct on-site assessments of the patient's home. Based on their findings, the team provides specific recommendations to improve the patient's ability to perform daily living skills and job functions.

Interdisciplinary team members may recommend an “independence day,” where patients will practice in a controlled environment, the skills learned during family training sessions. Community re-entry outings may also be performed to allow groups of patients to practice developing skills in real-world situations.

Patients continue their journey toward independence through our follow-up stroke recovery program, which may include the following:

• Medical evaluation and treatment
