Traditional Labor and Delivery

Even women at low risk for complications often feel more confident delivering their baby in a traditional labor and delivery (L & D) setting. And there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that! It’s always comforting to know that there is help available just in case. At UM PGHC, each private labor and delivery room is equipped with the latest, state-of-the-art equipment to monitor and track the health of the mother and the baby.

Our L&D is fully staffed and equipped to handle any type of birth, from low risk to high risk. All mothers are connected to special fetal monitoring equipment to keep a constant check of the baby’s heart rate and other indications of potential fetal distress. The alarms are wired directly to the nurse station which is right outside each room. Our delivery nurses check on you constantly to be sure your delivery is progressing appropriately, and our obstetric hospitalists and neonatologists are available when the time is right to help you deliver a healthy baby.

In L&D you have access to medications and other interventions during labor, including epidural pain relief, to make your delivery as comfortable as possible. We also encourage you to have a support person in the delivery room with you – partner, spouse, friend or other family member – to help you breathe, be there for moral support and to coach you through the delivery.

In the rare occasion where complications arise, our neonatologists and maternal fetal medicine specialists are always available, and if a cesarean section is needed, our dedicated delivery operating rooms are right down the hall. 

If you have had to deliver a baby by cesarean section in the past but would like to deliver your next one by vaginal birth, our experts will do everything in their power to help you do that. Our experts will evaluate you to determine if a vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC) is viable for you and will monitor you very closely throughout labor for any complications that may warrant a cesarean section instead. Most women who attempt a VBAC are successful, but it is our goal to always put your health and your baby’s health first.
