High Risk Pregnancy
While our midwifery and traditional obstetrics programs are intended for healthy women who are anticipating an uncomplicated pregnancy and delivery, we know that not all women fall into that category. Some women start their pregnancy with health issues such as high blood pressure or advanced maternal age, while others develop complications during pregnancy, such as gestational diabetes or placenta previa.
UM Capital developed the Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) program to handle medium- to high-risk pregnancies with the goal of helping all women deliver healthy babies. Our program focuses on presenting our patients with comprehensive options for their delivery, no matter how complicated, and helping a high-risk mother progress to full term for as long as it is safe for her and her baby. We always balance the risk to the mother's health and the baby's health when working with our patients to decide whether to perform a premature delivery.
All our MFM specialists have birthing privileges at the UM Capital Region Medical Center, which means they have access to its fully equipped Labor & Delivery suites and Special Care Nursery. Direct access to the hospital center's resources affords our MFM specialists more options when it comes to helping at-risk mothers carry and deliver healthy babies.
In addition to working with the obstetricians employed by UM Capital and the UM Capital Region Health Medical Group, our MFM specialists are available as a resource to area obstetricians when they have a complicated patient who may a little extra care during her pregnancy.
We treat a variety of pregnancy-related conditions such as:
- Cervical insufficiency
- Gestational Diabetes
- Ectopic pregnancy
- Fetal anomalies
- High-risk pregnancies, medical complications
- High-risk pregnancies, obstetric complications
- Pregnancy-associated hypertension
- Multiple babies
- Preterm labor or birth
- Rh sensitization
