Psychiatric Care - Behavioral Health
When you or a loved one needs help with depression, anxiety, substance abuse or other mental health issues, behavioral health services at University of Maryland Capital Region Health provides a full range of valuable programs and care services for you.
We are equipped to provide vital care to patients with any psychiatric or behavioral need. Our first contact with patients is often in the emergency department, where our medical team completes quick evaluations. Our Assessment and Stabilization Center at the University of Maryland Capital Region Medical Center provides a supportive space for further evaluation.
We offer a wide variety of treatment options — depending upon your specific needs — at UM Capital Region Medical Center and UM Laurel Medical Center.
Our services include:

- Partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient programs

The behavioral health services team includes highly skilled psychiatrists, counselors, nurses, dietitians, pharmacists, and social workers.
The UM Laurel Medical Center and UM Prince George's Hospital Center offer several support groups for patients, their family members and support systems. These support groups include:

Emergency Evaluations and Stabilization
Emergency psychiatric assessments are available 24-hours a day at the UM Laurel Medical Center and UM Prince George's Hospital Center.
An experienced behavioral health professional along with consultation from physicians and psychiatrists evaluates each person and determines the best level of care.
If appropriate, patients may be observed for up to 23 hours in the Assessment and Stabilization Center at UM Capital Region Medical Center. The center is a safe place (separate from the emergency department) where patients are observed and stabilized for up to 23 hours before being admitted as an inpatient, transferred to a more appropriate care setting or sent home.
Behavioral Health Team
Our Behavioral Health team mirrors our population. We pay attention to the cultural diversity of the population we serve and we want our patients to feel comfortable and included when in our program. Our health care team respects and recognizes cultural differences.
We work collaboratively with the entire medical team at UM Capital. When needed, our psychiatric nurse educators deliver on-the-spot training to our medical team. Our psychiatric physician assistants are available to any patient in our hospitals who may need a psychiatric consultation.

Everyone who works in Behavioral Health at UM Capital is dedicated to keeping our units and our patients safe. This includes administration assistants, unit secretaries and environmental service staff who are trained to work with mental health patients.
