Purpose:

To foster collaborative practice/academic relationships that lead to APRN student placements and facilitate student recruitment at UMMC as well as faculty practice sites.

Objectives:

  • Address educational gaps related to current practice.
  • Understand practice pre-requisites and the education necessary to achieve a more prepared graduate.
  • Improve transition of new graduate APRNs to professional practice.
  • Prioritize partnership to restructure for value-driven practice.
  • Expand UMMC partners on curriculum committee.
  • Explore innovative solutions to meet the professional education needs of experienced APNs.

Shannon Idzik, DNP, MS, CRNP, FAANP (Associate Dean for the DNP Program, University of Maryland School of Nursing)

photo of Shannon Idzik, DNP, MS, CRNP, FAANPDr. Idzik is an Associate Professor at the University of Maryland School of Nursing. She is currently the Associate Dean of the DNP program. She has been on faculty since 2005 has served as the program director for the Adult Gero NP program and then the Director of the DNP program. She maintains a faculty practice as a nurse practitioner in the University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in the Comprehensive CARE Center. She is active in the professional community, serving as a Collegiate Commission on Nursing Education (CCNE) site evaluator and the nurse from practitioner represented to the regional health information exchange, CRISP. She has served as an appointed member of Maryland Health Services Cost Review Commission Physician Alignment and Engagement workgroup and led recommendation #1 to remove scope of practice barriers for advanced practice nurses on the Maryland Action Coalition on the Future of Nursing for more than five years.

Dr. Idzik serves as the Treasurer of the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties. She is a recent past president of the Nurse Practitioner Association of Maryland (NPAM). She was awarded AANP State Award for Excellence in 2012, was selected as a Fellow of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners in 2014 and the NONPF policy award in 2015. Dr. Idzik directed the DNP program during University of Maryland's BS-DNP transition. She is member of the AACN Task Force on Implementation of the DNP.

Carmel McComiskey, DNP, CRNP, FAANP (Director of Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants, University of Maryland Medical Center)

photo of Carmel McComiskey, DNP, CRNP, FAANPDr. McComiskey is the Director of NPs and PAs at University of Maryland Medical Center and Assistant Professor, University of Maryland School of Nursing. She is certified in acute and primary care and has practiced in Pediatric Surgery for almost 35 years, providing care for children with enuresis and bowel management needs. Dr. McComiskey is a member of AANP, STTI, NPAM, NAPNAP and a charter member and past president of APSNA and was the recipient of their Founder's Award. She represented APSNA revising the ANA Pediatric Nursing Scope and Standards. She is an evaluator for the CCNE. Dr. McComiskey's research includes voiding dysfunction and she has authored many presentations and publications, served as editor of Nursing Care of the Pediatric Surgical Patient (2nd and 3rd Eds.) and as Assistant Editor for The Journal of Bariatric Nursing and Surgical Patient Care. She is currently serving the editorial board of Journal of Pediatric Surgical Nursing.
