Entry-Level Education and Practice - UMNursing
Purpose:
To explore innovative opportunities to partner to meet the needs of students, new nurses and experienced nurses and optimize healthcare outcomes.
Objectives:
- Explore innovative solutions to meet the educational needs of experienced RNs
- Explore educational gaps related to current nursing practice (Academic)
- Explore education gaps related to current nursing practice (Practice)
- Explore strategies to facilitate UMSON students to complete final practicum on unit of hire (evolved into facilitating a smooth entry into practice with major efforts on the Scholar Pilot)
- Provide additional structure to the scholar pilot to optimize readiness to practice, and promote efficiency of orientation
- Facilitate a smoother transition from student to new hire, completion of orientation and integration into the unit milieu
Nina Trocky, DNP, RN, NE-BC
(Associate Dean for the Baccalaureate Program, University of Maryland School of Nursing)
Dr. Nina Trocky is an associate professor and Assistant Dean of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program. With over 10 years of nursing education experience, she has taught in baccalaureate and graduate nursing programs, and held program director position at the National Cancer Institute, as a subcontractor, project coordinator and research nurse positions at Georgetown University Medical Center Lombardi Cancer Center, and director of nursing at Home Care America.
Areas of interest are curriculum development and evaluation, student assessment, and student support. Professional activities include serving as the President-elect for the Maryland Deans and Directors, Southern Regional Education Board Council on Collegiate Education Governmental Affairs Committee, and Franklin Square Medical Center and UMMC Nurse Residency Advisory Committees.
Dr. Trocky holds a Doctor or Nursing Practice (DNP) from Waynesburg University, a Post-masters Certificate in Nursing Education from the University of Maryland School of Nursing, a Master's of Science in Nursing (Community Health) from The Catholic University of American, and a BSN from Temple University.
Gena Stanek, MS, RN, CNS-BC

Gena Stiver Stanek has been a nurse for 36 years with 31 years of experience in the role of Clinical Nurse Specialist functioning to improve patient care and nursing practice. 27 of those years have been at the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center (UMMC).
She works collaboratively with nurse leaders and interdisciplinary staff. Educational experience includes presenting in hospital wide, School of Nursing, local and national level venues. Her expertise includes process improvement, implementing innovations and evidence based practice, patient and family education, writing for low literacy, Patient Family Centered Care, on-demand video patient education and facilitation.
She routinely mentors staff who chair committees, create posters and presentations for local and national conferences. She is a University of Maryland School of Nursing Associate faculty and has served as a preceptor for nurses completing their graduate Clinical Nurse Specialist role practicum. She has authored a chapter in all 4 editions of Trauma Nursing: Resuscitation through Rehabilitation text book.
