How to Apply | Neurosurgery Residency

Each year, the program accepts two residents into the program. We have 14 total residents.

Applicants must register with both the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) and the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) to participate in the application cycle.

Eligibility 

Based on institutional requirements, applicants must possess one of the following qualifications in order to be eligible for appointment to our accredited residency program:

• Graduates of a medical school in the United States and Canada accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) OR graduates of colleges of osteopathic medicine in the United States accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA).
• Graduates of medical schools outside the United States and Canada who meet one of the following qualifications prior to appointment:
  • Have current valid J-1 sponsorship and a certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG); OR
  • Have a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in the U.S. licensing jurisdiction; OR
  • Graduates of medical schools that have completed the Fifth Pathway Program provided by an LCME- accredited medical school.

Application

The Neurological Surgery residency program utilizes the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) to review all applications. Applications are due September 29th, for the 2022 application cycle. (See the full ERAS timeline here.) Selected applicants will be notified via email and will be asked to choose one interview date from a list of dates, which are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis.

Note that due to the COVID-19 pandemic, our program will be conducting interviews virtually for the 2022 application cycle. Interviews will be announced shortly.

The following are used as a basis for selection of applicants:

• Medical school transcripts
• Letters of recommendation (at least three)
• USMLE transcript
• Personal statement
• MSPE (Dean’s letter - due by November 1st)
• ECFMG status (for international medical graduates)
• Research experiences, volunteer activities, work experience
• Scholarly activities: publications, poster presentations, oral presentations, abstracts, awards, grants
• Education: medical school, graduate, and undergraduate
• Quality of interaction with residents and faculty during interview day

Program Benefits

Neurosurgery residents need the proper tools and materials to succeed in their training. At the University of Maryland, residents are provided with the following:

• $3,000 during residency to purchase loupes, a personal headlamp if desired, a computer, books

• Travel and hotel coverage for accepted oral presentations to national meetings
