Letter from Clinical Cardiac EP Fellowship Program Director

The University of Maryland Cardiac Electrophysiology Fellowship has a track record of training leaders in Cardiac Electrophysiology in both academic medicine and clinical practice since its initial ACGME accreditation in 1995. Our graduates and faculty serve as local, regional, and national leaders in clinical cardiac electrophysiology.

Our Cardiac Electrophysiology Section is comprised of seven medicine and pediatric faculty who offer comprehensive Cardiac Electrophysiology services, including: consultation, implantation, extraction, and management of all cardiac implantable electronic devices, diagnostic electrophysiology study and catheter ablation of supraventricular tachycardia, atrial fibrillation, and ventricular tachycardia by endocardial and epicardial approaches, and left atrial appendage occlusion devices. Our fellows and faculty perform over 1200 procedures per year.

Further clinical and research opportunities are available in cardiac imaging, cardiovascular genetics, adult congenital heart disease, and 3-D printing.

Our Section works closely in collaboration with colleagues at the University of Maryland in Cardiovascular Medicine, Cardiac Surgery, Thoracic Surgery, Pediatric Cardiology, Radiology, Genetics and the Program in Personalized Medicine, Endocrinology, and Epidemiology for both clinical care and research. Our 2:1 faculty to fellow ratio ensures personalized instruction and mentorship. Our faculty serve on committees of the American Heart Association, American College of Cardiology, Heart Rhythm Society, and Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.

The University of Maryland Cardiac Electrophysiology Fellowship equips trainees to practice at the highest level in any setting graduates choose. The training program is based at the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC), the quarternary flagship of the University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS) and University of Maryland School of Medicine. We serve the local community of Baltimore and its suburbs, State of Maryland, mid-Atlantic region, and beyond. This diversity of patients, referral base, and procedure volume ensures ample experience with both common and rare cardiac arrhythmia disorders and community and referral based cardiac electrophysiology procedures.

Training is based at the UMMC in downtown Baltimore with rotations in the Cardiac Electrophysiology Laboratory, Cardiac Ambulatory Center, and Research. Daily didactic sessions include clinical conference, intracardiac electrogram and electrocardiography case review, lectures, journal club, and hands-on simulation. The combination of didactic education and graduated responsibility in patient care and performance of procedures prepares fellows for independent electrophysiology practice in any setting prior to graduation.

Our fellows have demonstrated academic productivity with peer reviewed publications and presentations at national scientific sessions. Research opportunities are available with the cardiac electrophysiology faculty, who have been supported by the National Institutes of Health, Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and American Heart Association, and with collaborators at the University of Maryland. Routine research and quality improvement conferences are critical components of the fellowship.
