Economic and Community Development
UMMC partners with community-based workforce organizations to provide youth and adult programs that lead to employment and advancement. The goal is to build a pipeline of qualified health care workers by leveraging strategic partnerships, removing barriers and providing advancement opportunities.
UMMC has been recognized in the Baltimore Economic Inclusion report by the Baltimore Integration Partnership. Read the full Baltimore Economic Inclusion report.
Baltimore Integration Partnership
- BIP is a collaborative partnership of anchor institutions, funders, nonprofits and public organizations focused on establishing economic inclusion in the Baltimore region. BIP Goals include:
- To connect local, small and minority-owned businesses to anchor procurement opportunities in Baltimore and the region
- To encourage and leverage anchor real estate investment for the intentional benefit of the broader community and small businesses
- To insure equitable opportunities and connect low income residents to jobs within anchors and anchor-supporting businesses
Career Advancement
UMMC employees are supported with their academic and professional advancement needs through these programs:
- Rising Star focuses on enhancing entry-level employee engagement, improving job readiness skills, reducing turnover and increasing productivity through training, mentoring and coaching.
- Bring Your "A" Game to Work is a progress that stresses the importance of attitude, appearance, attendance, ambition, accountability, acceptance and appreciation. These are the core values that address the work ethic gap that can be a hindrance to employment and retention.
- Career Coaching is probably the most important component of the program. New hires and incumbents are assisted in the areas of professionalism, employer expectations and overall competencies.
- Pathways to Success encompasses a comprehensive review of basic adult education (GED) and college prep (ACCUPLACER) classes. The goal is to prepare individuals for the workplace and higher education by removing barriers.
- Microsoft Training is technology-focused skills enhancement where clients are trained in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and internet research to equip them with the computer skills required in today's workplace.

Community Partners
Beside tending to the health needs of Baltimore City, UMMC extends to unemployed or underemployed community members, who possess the aptitude and passion for health care. UMMC offers opportunities for gainful employment at the Medical Center. These prospective employees are identified through a variety of partnerships with stakeholders in the community. Recruiting quality workers from the community supplies replacements as incumbents, and supports them to become upwardly mobile and fulfill their career goals. This is a win for all parties involved.
Community Partners include, but are not limited to:
Advisory Committees
- Southwest Partnership
- Baltimore Alliance for Careers in Healthcare
- BWIB Youth Council
Financial Literacy
Financial literacy education provides a comprehensive program for individuals to build an understanding of key concepts. There are many features that help make the curriculum engaging, motivating and easy to use. To achieve this objective, employees will be able to:
- Assess their current financial situation.
- Identify ways to increase income and decrease and prioritize expenses.
- Develop a financial recovery plan.
- Identify steps to successfully implement a financial recovery plan.
- Recognize how to guard against credit repair scams.
- Identify time-frames to review and adjust their financial recovery plan.

Live Near Your Work
Live Near Your Work was created to stimulate home ownership within the City of Baltimore and support the revitalization and stabilization of targeted neighboring communities. The Baltimore City Live Near Your Work program will contribute $2,500 per eligible participant. The University of Maryland Medical Center will match the contribution with $2,500 toward down payment or closing costs for eligible participants.
Past participants:
In October of 2014, an overjoyed Ashley Cooper became a proud homeowner by taking advantage of UMMC's Live Near Your Work program.
"…UMMC set things in motion and changed my life. I was 18 when I entered the program. I was able to buy a house for my girls and me through the Live Near Your Work Grant. I'm able to do things to provide for my girls. I love the people and the way the medical center functions. Workforce Development continues to work with us. I plan to utilize the tuition reimbursement program to further my career. I would definitely recommend the program to anyone."
Minority Business Purchasing
UMMS supports organizations that foster the growth and development of disadvantaged businesses; this includes a commitment to purchasing from minority and women-owned business enterprises.
Southwest Partnership
The Southwest Partnership began in 2012 as a small group of concerned community leaders began organizing around the over-concentration of drug treatment facilities in the area. They realized that seven neighborhoods working together would have a greater impact than seven neighborhoods working alone.
The neighborhood leadership invited local institutions to join them, recognizing that these anchor institutions impacted and were impacted by the strength and health of the communities they were in. UMMC and UMB are two of these supporting institutions.
