Patient Information - Selective Internal Radiation Therapy
Patients interested in receiving Selective Internal Radiation Therapy (SIRT) should Fax the appropriate medical records to the UMGCCC referral coordinator. (Please see Records Required for Evaluation). We will respond within a few days regarding eligibility for the treatment.
If a patient is eligible, he/she will come to UMGCCC in Baltimore for evaluation, which will include the following tests:
-
Liver angiogram with MAA
-
Pulmonary scan
-
PET/CT scan and/or CT/MRI scan (if not already performed)
-
AcQSim-liver scan (to establish liver volume)
-
Blood work (including liver function tests)
A team of specialists will consult with the patient, including liver cancer experts in medical oncology, radiation oncology, and interventional radiology.
If the above tests confirm eligibility for SIR-Spheres treatment, the patient will receive the first SIR-Spheres® infusion within three weeks.
SIR-Spheres® infusions are performed as an outpatient procedure. Treatment usually consists of two treatments, one each to the right and left lobe of the liver, given at least four weeks apart.
Follow-up treatment includes a Bremsstrahlung scan (Nuclear Medicine) within 24 hours of the SIR-Spheres procedure, blood work at two week intervals, and CT/MRI scans four weeks after the treatment. A follow-up PET/CT scan is typically done six weeks after the second treatment.
