Cancer Research and Clinical Trials

Cancer research is integral to the mission of the University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center. UMGCCC’s involvement in basic, clinical and translational research serves not only the patients who come through our door, but also those with cancer around the globe. Whether our physicians and scientists are developing new medicines or therapy technologies, better ways of performing surgery, or superior multidisciplinary treatment strategies, the ultimate result is improved lives for patients with cancer.

As one of only about 50 comprehensive cancer centers in the United States designated by the National Cancer Institute, UMGCCC’s research programs are held to high standards. Cancer center investigators are drawn from the University of Maryland School of Medicine; University of Maryland, College Park; and various other schools at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. Our physicians also offer patients opportunities to participate in clinical research trials, many of which are investigator-initiated in addition to industry-sponsored and NCI-supported cooperative group trials. These trials give patients access to interventions that may not be widely available elsewhere for several years. Clinical research trials explore novel, cutting-edge interventions, often comparing these to standard of care therapies.
