Gynecologic Cancer
The Gynecologic Oncology Team at UM St. Joseph Medical Center is a collaborative partnership between Mercy Medical Center and University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center. The team provides advanced treatment options for cervical, uterine and ovarian cancers and other reproductive system cancers, and is led by nationally renowned gynecologic surgeon Dr. Hyung Suk Ryu.
Addressing GYN cancers from early, Stage I to complex, Stage IV, genital tract cancers, Dr. Ryu works closely with UM St. Joseph's multidisciplinary oncology team. Women with gynecologic cancers rely on these gifted diagnosticians for their skill, expertise, compassion and surgical talent. To ensure continuity of care, the physicians at UM St. Joseph's Cancer Institute keep the referring physician informed of a patient's treatment and progress every step of the way.
This expert team of specialists is dedicated to the care of women with gynecologic cancers, including a holistic philosophy that is attentive to mind, body and spirit, and focuses on patients as individuals.
Cervical Cancer
Tests to diagnose cervical cancer include:
- Pap test
- Colonoscopy
- Biopsy
Endometrial Cancer (Uterine Cancer)
The doctor will ask about your symptoms and medical history. Tests may include:
- Blood and urine tests
- Pelvic exam - the physician uses a gloved finger to examine the uterus, vagina, ovaries, fallopian tubes, bladder and rectum for lumps or a change in size or shape
- Pap test
- Biopsy of the uterine lining
- Dilation and curettage (D & C)
Ovarian Cancer
Your doctor will ask you about your symptoms and medical history and perform a physical examination. Tests may include:
- Pelvic exam
- Lower GI series or barium enema – a series of x-rays of the colon and rectum after having an enema containing barium
