Achieving Program Sustainability Requires Commitment

The 100 Free Screenings mammogram program, which began February 14, 2012, evolved from a competitive 18-month grant award called One Voice, which the UM SJMC Cancer Institute received from the American Cancer Society, and it continues today. The purpose of the program is to reduce barriers to breast health literacy and increase routine screenings among uninsured and/or underserved women in the Baltimore metropolitan area. Monthly opportunities continue to be offered for uninsured women in Baltimore City and Baltimore County to receive a clinical breast exam and screening mammogram in collaboration with Advanced Radiology, the Breast Center and Nueva Vida, a comprehensive breast cancer support program for Latinas.

For the sixth year, Advanced Radiology generously renewed UM SJMC Cancer Institute's contract for the 100 Free Screenings mammogram program referred to as the One Voice program through June 2018, bringing the total number of mammograms provided to over 600. Due to an increase in screening requests, follow-up diagnostics, and requests from symptomatic women under 40, Advanced Radiology provided additional mammograms to meet program needs. Until July 2017, One Voice was the only Central Maryland hospital-based program to accept symptomatic women under 40. However, based on the One Voice under 40 metrics which were reported to Baltimore County Cancer Coalition leadership to demonstrate community need, the Baltimore County Cancer Screening Program now accepts symptomatic women under 40 in their program.

As a quality improvement measure, follow-up diagnostic mammograms are also covered under the One Voice program. This quality process, which includes patient navigation and translation, facilitates better continuity of care for our uninsured participants. During the period of January through December 2017, 108 women were evaluated. Follow-up diagnostics were provided for 37 women. One cancer was diagnosed. Additionally, there is now a seamless referral process to Baltimore County's Cancer Program for uninsured/underinsured women who are eligible for free cervical and/or colorectal screening.
