How We Diagnose Concussions
Our team of highly qualified healthcare providers use the ClearEdge Brain Health Toolkit to get an accurate assessment of your athlete's brain health. When a suspected concussion or head injury occurs, this toolkit is used for concussion assessment and evaluation to help guide our healthcare providers with appropriate treatment decisions for your athlete's recovery.
UM Urgent Care also uses the ClearEdge Toolkit to help manage and monitor the Return to Learn, Return to Play and Return to Work protocols for your athlete, ensuring a safe re-entry back into the sport.
If our team determines that the concussion will need the care of a subspecialist, we'll help connect you with a specialist for further evaluation.
What is a Concussion?
A concussion is a form of traumatic brain injury (TBI), caused by extreme force to the head by a hit or collision which causes the brain to move rapidly back and forth against the skull. The causes chemical changes in the brain, which can lead to symptoms.
Years ago, concussions were referred to as someone "having their bell rung" or "seeing stars." Athletes were often encouraged to play through these symptoms. With the knowledge and heightened awareness now surrounding head injuries, we know these are signs that the person should be removed from the activity and monitored closely.
Signs of a concussion will occur after an impact to the head and can include:
- Blinking eyes, as if to refocus
- Dizziness
- Inability to walk in a straight
- Loss of consciousness
- Memory loss
If you believe someone had a concussion, it is important to keep that person awake and seek care immediately.
