Lia Young was as good as dead. Lying in a hospital bed, with less than 40 percent function in both lungs, it seemed pulmonary fibrosis had finally won. She was told that lung transplantation was her only option, but the hospital couldn’t perform the surgery because of her highly responsive autoimmune system.

Her husband, Robert, was told to get their affairs in order because Lia would soon need to move to hospice care.

After some searching on the internet, Robert connected with Aldo Iacono, MD, who helped arrange Lia's transport to the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC).

Lia, 38, was brought to Baltimore and received a double-lung transplant at UMMC, which houses one of the top lung transplant teams in the region.
