A group of four tendons, called the rotator cuff, give the shoulder a wide range of motion, making it the most mobile joint in the human body.

Injury or tear of the rotator cuff, however, is just one of many conditions that can cause shoulder pain.

At University of Maryland Orthopaedics, we recognize that each patient has a unique problem requiring specialized treatment.

We strive to provide individualized care to all our patients and prescribe treatment plans that suit their needs, whether that's with shoulder replacement surgery, shoulder arthroscopy or a range of alternative treatment options.

Shoulder Conditions We Treat

At UM Orthopaedics, we see patients for the full scope of shoulder injuries, including fractures, separations and bone spurs. Other common injuries we treat includes:

Shoulder Arthritis

When cartilage around our joints breaks down, this is called arthritis. We have ways to treat shoulder arthritis with and without surgery.

Shoulder Dislocation

If your shoulder becomes removed from its socket, this is a shoulder dislocation. There is a chance tendons in your shoulder may stretch or tear at the time of dislocation.

Rotator Cuff Injuries or Tears

If you have a torn rotator cuff, you may need surgery. Rotator cuff tendonitis develops over time, requires rest and can often be treated through physical therapy.

SLAP Tears

A SLAP tear stands for 'superior labrum, anterior to posterior' tear. This means the ligament keeping your arm bone in your shoulder is torn.
