Residency Program

The University of Maryland Neurosurgery Residency Program is one of the first in the country, training neurosurgeons since 1939.

This 7-year program offers a diverse operative experience and numerous opportunities for academic advancement.

The PGY-7 year is uniquely designed to allow residents to attain fellowship training, pursue research, or complete an advanced degree at any institution.

Case complexity and graded autonomy enable graduates of this program to be confident in their craft. Residents enjoy genuine camaraderie and collaboration between each other.

Fellowship Programs

Neurocritical Care: The University of Maryland Department of Neurology offers a UCNS-accredited fellowship in Neurocritical Care. Neurosurgery residents are eligible for this program. The Neurocritical Care Fellow trains in diagnosing and managing the full spectrum of acute neurological disease.

Endovascular Surgical Neuroradiology: The Department of Neurosurgery has a strong relationship with the Division of Interventional Neuroradiology. Neurosurgery residents rotate with this team early in residency and are eligible for this comprehensive one-year fellowship. The program prepares fellows with the latest in endovascular technology and therapy, from aneurysm embolization to mechanical thrombectomy. Many alumni have taken advantage of this opportunity.

Complex Spine Surgery: Starting in academic year 2021-2022, neurosurgery residents can complete additional training in the CAST-accredited Complex Spine Surgery Fellowship with Dr. Charles Sansur. Fellows learn a wide range of neurosurgical and orthopedic approaches for degenerative, deformity, traumatic, and neoplastic disease. The program is enriched with didactic sessions and case conferences, and robust opportunities for research. Dr. Sansur’s past mentees have obtained prestigious positions and have established strong spine practices.

Medical Student Opportunities

Clerkship and Sub-Internships

The Department of Neurosurgery offers a clerkship in Neurosurgery for third-year medical students, and two Sub-Internships for fourth-year medical students and visiting medical students. The Sub-Internships include Neurosurgery (NSUR 548) and Neurotrauma (NSUR 544). Visiting medical students interested in gaining exposure to neurosurgery and to the University of Maryland program are encouraged to apply.

Research Opportunities

The Department of Neurosurgery is offering the inaugural Dr. Charles Bagley Jr. Neurosurgery Research Fellowship for medical graduates or US medical students. Dr. Bagley was an early contributor, with colleague and mentor Dr. Harvey Cushing, to the field of neurosurgery in North America. Dr. Bagley started the Neurosurgery service at the University of Maryland Hospital (previously called the “Baltimore Infirmary of Medical University”) in 1930, and promoted scholarship and innovation to improve the neurosurgical care of patients.

The fellow will engage in clinical research in the Department, with the goal of advancing ideas and information to improve neurosurgical techniques and patient care. It is expected the Fellow will maintain current clinical databases, and build and maintain new databases derived from the busy clinical practices at the University of Maryland. In collaboration with our research team, the Fellow will leverage these datasets to explore unanswered and new clinical questions.
