Hematology

The University of Maryland Medical Center offers treatment for diseases of the blood, both cancerous and non-cancerous.

Our physicians have expertise in several non-cancerous, or “benign,” blood diseases. This includes management of bleeding diatheses, evaluation of clotting disorders, and treatment of sickle cell disease. Many benign hematologic conditions are inherited and are present at birth, although they may occur later in life.

Pediatric patients with blood conditions are treated at the University of Maryland Children’s Hospital, while adult patients are evaluated by UMMC’s benign hematologists.

In addition, UMMC has two hematologists who specialize in providing care for adult patients with sickle cell disease. They actively conduct clinical research with the goal of identifying better treatments for patients living with this condition.

Blood cancers, such as leukemias and lymphomas, are treated by our hematologists at the UM Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center.
