A physician holding endoscopy equipment

At the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC), our GI doctors have access to the latest gastroenterology research and innovative technologies, ensuring patients receive the best, most appropriate treatment for their conditions.

Additionally, patients can participate in clinical trials that offer innovative treatments, often years before they are available commercially.

Learn more about different GI procedures we perform at UMMC:

Appendix Removal

More serious cases of appendicitis are treated with abdominal surgery to remove the appendix, though mild cases may sometimes be cured with antibiotics. Doctors either use an "open" technique or a minimally invasive, laparoscopic appendectomy.

Colonoscopy

Colonoscopy is an important cancer screening tool as well as a diagnostic test used evaluate gastrointestinal symptoms.

Cryotherapy

Cryotherapy, a treatment for Barrett's esophagus and early stage esophageal cancer, uses extremely cold liquid nitrogen to destroy abnormal, precancerous cells in the lining of the esophagus. One of the first centers in the world to use this cryotherapy, UMMC remains a pioneer in this treatment.

Endoscopy

Our GI endoscopy suite offers interventional endoscopy, as a therapy for conditions ranging from cancer to pancreatitis, as well as specialized endoscopic procedures, including:

Endoscopic Ultrasound

This special endoscope uses high-frequency sound waves to produce detailed images of your digestive tract.

Capsule Endoscopy

Capsule endoscopy is a non-invasive test to diagnose the cause of obscure GI bleeding and other small intestinal disorders such as Crohn's disease. It can also be used to diagnosed GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease).

Gallbladder Removal

Gallbladder removal treats gallbladder diseases like gallstones, infection or inflammation (cholecystitis), severe abdominal pain due to gallbladder disease and blockage of the bile drainage tubes (biliary obstruction).

IBD Treatments

Surgery is just one potential treatment for IBD. Our doctors will weigh all the options, including infusion therapy and nutritional counseling, and help you choose the ones that are right for you.
