UMMC CFO Joe Hoffman

Joseph E. “Joe” Hoffman III is a seasoned finance executive who is well-versed in Maryland’s unique hospital reimbursement environment. He is a valuable asset in helping the University of Maryland Medical Center advance its three-part mission of excellence in patient care, education and innovation as a large, urban academic medical center.

Joe plays a critical role as UMMC focuses on improving performance, outcomes, and the ever-critical measurements for quality, safety and patient experience that impact our financial health. Additionally, he helps inform important decisions on capital investments, operating expenses and how UMMC utilizes its resources to serve its mission.

Joe previously served as Executive Vice President and CFO at University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Health, where he was part of the team since 1997.

Joe received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Lycoming College in 1983 and his Master of Science degree in Health Care Finance from Widener University in 1987. Prior to coming to UM Upper Chesapeake, Joe spent over 10 years as the CFO of the Alfred I. DuPont Institute of the Nemours Foundation in Wilmington, Delaware.

He is a member of the Healthcare Financial Management Association and has served on several local and regional not-for-profit boards.
