Internal Medicine & Transitional Year Residency Programs

Medical Interns are chosen for the Internal Medicine and Transitional Year Residency programs based on the strength of applicants' academic record, potential success as future clinicians, professional interests and life experiences, and ability to collaborate and contribute in a supportive educational environment. Successful applicants have been drawn from highly regarded medical schools in the U.S. as well as from around the world. Our program is proud to be richly diversified and warmly receptive to competitive applicants from international medical schools.

Application Process

We encourage you to explore the educational opportunities that exist at University of Maryland Medical Center Midtown Campus, and consider applying to our program. Applications are only processed and accepted through ERAS for our Internal Medicine and Transitional programs. All positions are only offered through the National Residency Matching Program.

Candidates for interview selection should submit the following materials through ERAS no later than December 31:

  1. ERAS application
  2. Curriculum vitae (ERAS format is acceptable)
  3. Personal statement
  4. Medical Student Performance Evaluation (Dean's letter), if available
  5. Three letters of recommendation, including one from the Chair of the Department of Medicine if available
  6. Medical school transcript
  7. USMLE Step 1 report
  8. USMLE Step 2 CK report. If you are a US graduate, we prefer to have your CK scores no later than January 30.
  9. Verification of any prior medical education (i.e. graduation from medical school or prior residency training experience)
  10. Valid ECFMG certificate
  11. Contact information, including email address

For the upcoming ERAS® cycle, with the match date in 2023, our Internal Medicine categorical program will be participating in the Supplemental ERAS application offered through the AAMC's ERAS program. Applicants must complete the MyERAS application as in the past, but participation in the Supplemental ERAS application is optional for applicants. Applicants for the Transitional Year program should not expect to participate in Supplemental ERAS application, as it only is available for a limited number of specialties.

If you are an Osteopathic Medical Student, we require the Level 1 and Level 2 of the COMLEX-USA examination. Alternatively, the USMLE Step 1 & 2 examinations can replace or supplement the COMLEX examinations.

What To Expect

It is our goal to review applications utilizing a holistic approach. Please understand that the review process takes time. In the interest of transparency, we are sharing our plan for this upcoming recruitment season. We hope to review all applications from Mid-September through the end of October. We aspire to review 1/6th of the applications each week, and we will send out invitations for interviews on Monday afternoons at 5 PM starting in late September, based on those applications that were reviewed the prior week. Thus, the date that you are invited for an interview to our program should not be construed as a signal of your perceived candidacy.

Upon review of your application materials, you will receive an email informing you if an interview has been granted. Interviews are conducted on Mondays and Wednesdays and Thursdays from Mid-October through the end of January. Please be aware that we will adhere to the guidelines established by the Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine (AAIM) for the 2022-2023 residency interview season. All interviews will be conducted virtually for all applicants, including those who reside in or near Baltimore. We agree with AAIM’s intent to maintain equity for all applicants, and will therefore not conduct in-person open houses or second- looks.

For those who are not invited for an interview, we will establish a short waitlist, in case there are cancellations.  However, based our experience over the past two years of conducting virtual interviews, we foresee relatively few cancellations, compared to years in which we conducted in-person interviews.  

Please do not call or email the Department of Medicine to check on the status of your application. In addition, after your interview, please do not feel obliged to send a thank you note. However, feel free to correspond if you have a specific question about the training program.

 

Visas for Residency Training

  • The University of Maryland Medical Center Midtown Campus adheres to the standards and guidelines for the employment of non-immigrants as established by federal immigration laws and the U.S. Department of Labor. UMMC Midtown Campus will hire only U.S. citizens and non-citizens who are have been authorized for employment. We are pleased to sponsor non-immigrant alien residents under the J-1 visa program. UMMC Midtown Campus does not consider H-1B and F1 visas appropriate for resident training.
  • Sponsorship guidelines require that all residents who require visa sponsorship convert to a J1 visa prior to starting their training with UMMC Midtown.

If you are an International Medical Graduate, please note the following considerations:

  • Possession of a Valid ECFMG certificate is required at the time of the match.
  • Active clinical experience in a US or Canadian medical school or teaching hospital is not required, but preferred.  So that we can accurately review this information, be certain to enter this information in the appropriate areas in ERAS, e.g., under Residency/Fellowship/Work or under Volunteer/Other Work. 
  • We consider the USMLE score one component of the overall application. We aspire to evaluate each candidate based on his or her overall accomplishments and potential, as demonstrated by each component of the application. Though specific minimum USMLE scores have not been defined or established by the program, successful candidates in the past have had USMLE scores over 240 (step 1) and 245 (step 2). Applicants who have failed any USMLE step examination are less likely to be granted interviews.
