The Division of Gastroenterology (GI) of University of Maryland Medical Center – Midtown Campus evaluates, diagnoses and treats patients with digestive disease and liver disorders at our Digestive Health Center. Patients may also receive therapeutic services, including cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), to work with the emotional aspects of GI disease.

Conditions treated at the Digestive Health Center include:

  • Diseases of the colon, GI tract and esophagus
  • Irritable Bowl Syndrome (IBS)
  • Liver Disease
  • Pancreas Disease

All patients have direct access to University of Maryland School of Medicine specialists for GI symptoms and treatment. 

Location

The Midtown Campus Outpatient Tower provides wrap-around services to treat GI diseases in one convenient location.

Symptoms

The symptoms of a GI disorder may include:

  • Abdominal Pain
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea
  • Gas and Bloating
  • Heartburn

Diagnosis and Treatment

Our specialists can perform the following diagnostic tests to determine your condition:

  • Colonoscopy to diagnose colon polyps, colon cancer and inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis

  • Upper endoscopy to identify and treat common conditions, including ulcer disease, heartburn and hiatal hernia

  • Testing for liver disease, gallstones and pancreatic diseases using an ultrasound and our advanced CT scanner 

Proper diagnosis will help our specialists develop a treatment plan based on your individual needs. 

We also provide the following support: 

  • Consultation for Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Irritable Bowel Syndrome
  • Access to a registered dietician specializing in IBD/IBS
  • Access to alternative medicine practitioner.

Motility

Our GI specialists are skilled in testing and treat motility disorders — when it is difficult for food to move from the throat through the digestive system — at our Comprehensive Motility Center.

Testing for motility includes:

  • Manometry – measuring the pressure throughout the gastrointestinal tract
  • Motility study – a test to determine if the esophagus muscles are working correctly
