The University of Maryland Medical System began vaccinating its employees on December 14, 2020. Hear from five frontline healthcare workers as they tell why they chose to be vaccinated and what it means to them.

Shawn Hendricks, MSN, RN

Hendricks gets a COVID vaccination

Nursing Director of Medicine, UMMC Cardiac Services & Tele-sitter Program

A Baltimore City native who now lives in Baltimore County, Hendricks has worked at the hospital for more than two decades, starting her career at UMMC as a student nurse.

She said she was proud to be the first person vaccinated at UMMS, and encourages others to do the same.

Daisy Solares, RT

Solares gets a COVID vaccination

Respiratory Therapist, UMMC Downtown Campus

A Baltimore City resident, Solares has been a respiratory therapist at UMMC since July 2014 and has provided care for COVID patients.

She says the opportunity to be among the first vaccinated was a way to honor her father, Juan Gabriel Solares, who passed away this spring due to COVID.

Michael Winters, MD, MBA

Winters gets a COVID vaccination

Professor of Emergency Medicine, UMSOM

Vice Chair, Clinical and Administrative Affairs, UMSOM Department of Emergency Medicine

Dr. Winters is a physician in UMMC's Adult Emergency Department. He also serves as the co-Lead for the Emergency Department Operations Branch of the System's COVID Incident Command and has provided care for COVID patients during his clinical shifts.

Henry gets a COVID vaccination

Professor of Surgery, UMSOM
Director, Division of Wound Healing and Metabolism, R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center

A Shock Trauma physician for 23 years, Dr. Henry has cared for COVID patients.

"I'm proud to be among the first clinical frontline healthcare workers for UMMS to be vaccinated, and strongly believe that this means we are one step closer to returning to normalcy."

Thomas gets a COVID vaccination

Environmental Services, UMMC Midtown Campus

Thomas's wife is sick at home, so he wanted to take advantage of the opportunity to be vaccinated to make life at home safer for his family.
