Telehealth

Virtual appointments are now available for all neurology services to both new and existing patients. We strongly encourage patients to schedule video and/or phone consults for all non-urgent medical concerns. Limiting in-person visits will help prevent the spread of COVID-19, and ensure the safety of our patients and staff. Please contact us to find out if telehealth is available for your next visit.

Before Your Visit

Please bring medical records and medical images (films or CDs) from your prior providers and hospitalizations and bring them to your appointment for your provider to review.

Make sure to bring your ID, insurance card, and any approval or other necessary paperwork.

Visit reminders:

You should receive a written reminder about seven days before your visit. You will also receive a text message or phone call asking you to confirm your appointment 1-3 days before your appointment.

Cancellations

If you need to cancel your appointment more than 24 hours before your appointment, please let us know as soon as possible by calling 410-328-4323.

Your Visit

Dr. David Benavides goes through tests with a patient

When you arrive at your appointed time, you will be checked in and added to our electronic medical record systems.

The Medical Assistant will start your visit by taking your vital signs, checking your medication list and taking a preliminary history. Then, the physician or care provider portion of visit will start.

As the University of Maryland is a teaching hospital, your visit may include evaluation by a physician in training (a resident or fellow) prior to being seen by your provider. In some cases, a trainee (resident or fellow) will assume responsibility of your care.

Generally you will spend 45-60 minutes with your provider for an initial visit and 20-30 minutes for a follow up visit. As many of our patients have complex neurological problems, these times are estimates and your time with the physicians may be more or less.

Allowing for registration, medical assistant, and physician time, most initial visits are 1.5-2 hours and most follow-up visits are 60 minutes. As many of our patients have complex neurological problems and are at an advanced stage of their neurological disease, these times are general and your time with the physicians may be more or less.
