About Me

Dr. Birnbaum specializes in internal medicine, pulmonary diseases and critical care medicine. He is passionate about improving the lives of patients with chronic conditions such as COPD and caring for the most critically ill. He is a wonderful mentor to physicians and other members of the care team.

Dr. Birnbaum joined University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Health (UM UCH) in 2002. He is clinically active as an intensivist in UM UCH's intensive care units and as a member of its Pulmonary & Sleep Medicine practice. As medical director of the intensive care units and Physician Enterprise, he brings extensive experience and leadership to his role.

Dr. Birnbaum attended medical school at the George Washington University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C. He completed his internal medicine residency and pulmonary and critical care medicine fellowship at the University of Maryland Medical Center.

Dr. Birnbaum is a former member of the UM UCH Board of Directors. He was named a COVID-19 honoree by The Daily Record in 2020. He was previously named a "Top Doctor" in the specialty of intensivists/critical care and pulmonary medicine by Baltimore magazine.

Dr. Birnbaum lives with his wife and three children in Bel Air, Maryland.

  • I love Dr. Birnbaum. He is very friendly, he really listens to what you say. He answeres questions completely, so you really understand what he is talking about. He gives you options about yoiur care. I would highly recommend him to anyone with a pulmonary problem!!

  • Dr. Birnbaum was exceptionally. He explained my lung CT and breath test results in a clear understandable manner and alleviated my concerns. He laid out a plan for future care and gave me several options on how to proceed. Prior to seeing Dr. Birnbaum, I was very worried that I had emphysema but after seeing him, I was very relieved to know that I do not. Even though I may have some lung issues, I feel confident that I am getting the best care possible and will have a positive outcome.
